In January 1994, Michael Zink opened a gallery in a small space in Regensburg, a historic city about an hour away from Munich. From the beginning, the gallery’s program had a clear focus on contemporary international art. After running a successful space in Munich and a temporary project space in New York, Galerie Zink became based in Berlin for 10 years. Its latest partnering was with Florian Kromus as Kromus + Zink located at Linienstrasse, in Berlin Mitte.
As Michael Zink was still based in the south of Germany, he decided to bring his life and work together in a single place. He moved the gallery to the small village of Waldkirchen, in the countryside between Munich and Nuremberg. Waldkirchen is an old place of pilgrimage that goes back to 1107 AD. The former parish house from 1886 was temporarily used to host curated exhibitions of the gallery and is located in the heart of the small village, overlooking the surrounding landscape. In fall 2017, a neighbouring historic building was remodelled to create a new gallery space, art storage, as well as an artist studio, which officially opened on 6 April 2019. The new building was designed and planned by the Lausanne based architects “Atelier Dimanche – Mathieu Robitaille and Tamara Henry”.
Along with the gallery’s relocation, there was a renewed focus on the core of the gallery’s activities. From the beginning, our primary interest has been finding artists that have a strong artistic vision and the potential to build up a coherent oeuvre in the context of developments in contemporary art. As a gallery, we see ourselves as helping these artists to develop their work and their careers by successfully placing their works in institutional and private collections, and by giving them exposure at important international exhibitions. We believe in maintaining an open and honest dialogue with our artists, collectors and institutions about artistic content and formal qualities. This is an essential aspect of our work. We cooperate with a network of contemporary galleries in Europe and believe more in collaboration than competition – an approach that we enjoy and that has contributed to our success.
We are not off the grid. We just do what we love at a place where we want to be!
